The Treatments that Dermatologists are Gifting Themselves this Season

December 24, 2020 //  by Dr. Robert Paull, MD//  Leave a Comment

After the year we’ve had, every one of us deserves the chance to indulge a little, dermatologists included.

With the onset of winter, a prime opportunity to refresh your skin with an energy-based device that demands UV avoidance, RealSelf, the online dermatology and plastic surgery forum, asked a handful of board-certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons what treatments they’re gifting themselves this season. Here are the highlights.

The Treatments that Dermatologists are Gifting Themselves this Season

Microneedling and Ultherapy

Microneedling is a great way to stimulate your body’s collagen production. “It also makes my pores look tiny, reduces the appearance of fine lines, and is incredible for evening out the tone of the skin and getting rid of scars,” says a facial plastic surgeon.

Ultherapy is a noninvasive ultrasound technology that shrinks and tightens the fibrous layer under the skin. It’s beneficial for anyone who’s experiencing mild to moderate laxity.

Both treatments are safe for all skin types. And there’s no downtime with either.

Picosecond laser

The PicoSure Focus has what’s called a “focus lens array,” which fractionates the laser’s energy to an extent, triggering a cascade of effects that includes a boost in collagen and elastin production. That helps even out skin tone, reduce the appearance of pores and small wrinkles, and brighten one’s complexion.

Not bad for a treatment that only takes 15 minutes.

Fraxel

The Fraxel Dual uses two different wavelengths to target both the superficial and deep layers of the skin, which makes it especially effective at treating acne scarring, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, surgical scars, and for overall resurfacing and rejuvenation. Beyond the face, it can also be used on the neck and hands, which tend to experience the same signs of aging and degree of sun damage as the face.

The Fraxel Dual is safe for all skin types.

Radiofrequency microneedling

The Profound RF has been shown to boost one’s own collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production, which results in tighter, firmer, more hydrated skin. “Not only do the texture and integrity of the skin improve but small areas of unwanted fat can also be reduced, with the help of a subcutaneous handpiece,” says a dermatologist.

The handpiece is comprised of five titanium-coated needles that penetrate the dermis and deliver radiofrequency energy while protecting the epidermis. Generally, a single treatment is all that’s needed. It’s safe for all skin types. And there’s little to no downtime.
